how to setup and tweak your Windows 10 Install

After you have re/installed windows, this is what you should, in this order: (make sure windows update is NOT running yet – You may want to unplug the ethernet)

1. Make sure you have the latest bios.

Motherboard manufacturer’s generally say if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. But always update the bios to the latest for a new machine. This can increase compatibility and functionality for your new hardware. You can do this before you install windows.

2. Install missing hardware drivers

Install the latest drivers from the web, not the included CD.

What’s missing? Go into Device Manager and look for any Yellow ? or !

Intel’s latest chipset drivers OR AM4’s latest chipset drivers
Nvidia’s latest GPU Drivers OR AMD’s latest GPU Drivers

3. Install a RamDrive

Duh, no brainier. A must for any power user. Especially with an SSD.

4. Remap Folders for SSD + HDD + Ramdrive use (If applicable)

5. Uninstall not needed Windows applications

Yes, even Windows 10 has bloatware. But it’s sometimes tricky or (not easily allowed) to uninstall, but here is the way to force it:

Open up a Windows PowerShell, as Administrator: (right click, etc)

windows10uninstall

Paste in whatever command line ONLY for whatever application you want to uninstall: (Keep the ones you use) Updated 2017.10.01

(October  2017 – It seems like you can’t uninstall Asphalt8Airborne (only unpin?), Keeper, March of Empires, Lord of Wards, can’t find the command line to remove Bubble Witch Saga 3,

If you want to remove ALL the above(I removed the Store from the list), just make a file called win.ps1 in notepad and paste every line above with PAUSE at the end:

Then put it in the c:/ directory and run it like this:

2016-10-12-06_21_52

(the exe is located in C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0)

and they’ll all be uninstalled. I would make the file for you but downloading a .bat files (.sp1) is a terrible idea to do from a shady site on the internet such as mine.

6. Reboot and now install windows updates.

7. Go into Power Options and set it up so it won’t go to sleep when you don’t want it to, etc.

8. Install, import and restore the rest of your stuff that you did from this previous step of properly backing up your old windows install.

9. Now go into the Startup (In Task Manager; CRL+SHIFT+ESC) and disable stuff you don’t want running. (right click disable)

2016-10-12-06_25_41-task-manager

10. Disable Windows Spying on you.

Open Registry  (regedit). Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection

Create a new a 32-bit DWORD value named AllowTelemetry and set it to 0 (it should already be set to 0).

Close that down and open up “Computer Management”

Go to Services and Application > Services:

Find

“Connected User Experiences and Telemetry”

&

“dmwappushsvc”

And DISABLE them both under Startup type:

11. It is a good idea to check out rest of the options in the Settings app – >Privacy and uncheck all that stuff you SHOULD have unchecked in the Windows Install Wizard.

12.  Uncheck “Allow files on this device to have contents indexed….” under your SSD. (if applicable).

13. Skip the login screen (if desired)

Type netplwiz into the search box

UNCHECK “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer”

14. Reboot and you should be good now. All done.

Here is a list of software that almost everyone should consider thinking about using
